Guest Reviews of the Herald Square Hotel

Hi There I stayed at your wonderful hotel a few months ago and I've been recommending it to everyone I know since I've gotten back to Australia but I thought I should take the time to say "thank you" for providing me with such a positive experience. Your staff were so friendly and kind, taking the time to recommend local sites and best routes to get there. I was nervous about coming to New York by myself with everything you hear about crime, but I felt so safe at your hotel and I think that speaks volumes! So once again, I appreciate your hospitality and keep up the great work. I look forward to staying with you again soon, Elisha Samra On Air Presentation Coordinator

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel New York City: "Thanks for a wonderful stay"
Just wanted to send a quick note to thank you so much for a wonderful stay in your lovely hotel. We were only there for 1 night, but we were so happy with everything from the moment we walked in the door! We had an early flight and got into the city way before normal check-in time, but the woman at the desk didn't even hesitate to give us our room early and even upgraded us to a more expensive room than we had booked! We've stayed at other NYC hotels before and trust me, we'll never stay at another one again! Next time we come to New York, we're calling on you again! Thanks again

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel New York City: "Thanks for a wonderful stay in the Big Apple!!"

Just a few words to say thank you to ALL the staff at the Hotel Herald Square. As this was our first visit to New York I would just like to say that we had a wonderful stay with you. The hotel itself far outseeded our expectations especially the rooms, location and friendliness of all the staff. I would like to give a special mention to Anna (housekeeper) who looked after our room in a highly professional and very friendly manner.Once again a very big thank you from us and I cant wait to stay with you again in the future.

PS: It took us a few nights to get used to our own beds after the luxurious comfort of the Herald Square Hotel. Definetely the best beds anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel New York City: "We loved the Herald Square Hotel!!"

I have traveled around the world and I must say this was not only a very reasonable rate but was also one of the nicest rooms I have seen in a long time! The beds were incredibly comfortable with the whitest, softest sheets and blankets including a comforter which all felt like the beds of some of the finest European hotels. The bath room had a deep luxurious marble bath with double sinks and great lighting, hair dryer and plenty of room to get ready for night out. We watched movies and listened to music on the large flat screen television and sat together at the lovely private cafe style table in the room to share a bottle of wine at night and our coffee in the morning beneath a large arched window. The long dressing table with a lighted magnified mirror made getting ready simple.

Every person from the front desk to the maid that cleaned the room- were polite, helpful and always smiling. We splurged on the best room as it was our anniversary and with these rates actually had plenty left over to go out and eat at some of the finest restaurants in the city! We will be back!

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel New York City

A first time visitor to this hotel we had no idea what to expect because of the budget price we had paid. The Herald Square Hotel receives a 5 star from us. We arrived at the hotel and were quickly and courteously checked in. The entire hotel was spotless and our room was neat and clean. The staff was quite helpful in answering questions and giving directions. Check-out was fast and once again the staff was courteous.

The room was kept neat and clean our entire stay and housekeeping quickly saw to replacing a burnt out light bulb. The bathroom was just as clean as the room and much larger than I expected. The bed was quite comfortable and hot coffee was always available in the lobby.

We were within walking distance to the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Macys and dining. A short walk to the subway took us to Uptown N.Y.

If you are looking for a budget hotel that will still offer courteous staff and clean rooms this is the place to stay. We will definitely stay here again!

Thank you, Herald Square, for making our visit to New York the best ever!

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel New York City: "The best find in NYC"

This hotel has to be one of the best finds in NYC. It is close to Herald Square and MSQ. The subway is a few steps away. Walk in the other direction and you are on Fifth Avenue with all its offerings. Location, Location, Location. Take a brisk walk and you are in the
heart of Broadway.

I had stayed at the hotel on another occasion, but their newly refurbished rooms with their equal to /or better than the Hilton's fluffy beds make your stay truly restful. It was very much appreciated after a day of New York shopping. The rooms were quiet to the extent that I almost slept until check out time.

The price is absolutely right in this case, with a wonderful coffee machine that will dispense cappuccino, hot chocolate, etc., any time of day in the lobby area. There is also a mini launderette with counter and bar stools (so shiny and bright and retro that you think Oliva Newton-John and John Travolta are going to come dancing in any minute) to relax in while you wait to take your clothes out of the dryer and give them a touch up in a "miniature steam press."

Another advantage point to the hotel is that booking your room on their website gives you the best price available. You don't have to be logging on to a travel site or a hotel site. You book immediately and the price you get is the best going price.
All in all you cannot miss. You get a clean more than comfortable modern room with a flat screen TV and even a mini CD player in the room for a price to fit any budget.

The Herald Square Hotel: "I don’t come to New York City to stay at a franchise hotel!"

I’ve stayed at the Herald Square Hotel over the past 6 years, and it’s still a thrill to stay in an historic building that celebrates its legacy, it’s a unique New York City experience. I used to come for the price and location alone, but now I’ve fallen in love with its history, personality, and marble bathrooms.

The new lobby is a comfortable and a quiet place to sit and talk in cozy comfort or to appreciate the addition of more Life Magazine memorabilia and information. The new laundry room, with a steam press, is on the first floor, just off the lobby. I can’t believe how convenient that was. For that reason we were able to pack light, and clean and press our clothes as we went along.

When we stayed there this time we found that the rooms were spotless, (as always), had been completely refurnished with new beds, (so comfortable we wanted to take it home with us, and we can!), crisp white sheets and a down comforter made our nights complete. Additionally, the room had a flat panel TV with Satellite and Free HBO, an in-room safe (great for my wife’s peace of mind), FREE High-Speed WI-FI Internet access.

We absolutely fell in love with the Marble bathrooms; they reminded us of a bygone era of elegance that one would pay through the nose for at one of the high priced hotels.

The location for us was perfect. Close to everything, shopping, great restaurants, and entertainment. Having grown up in the city I felt completely comfortable using the buses and subway to get around. My wife, a farm girl from Virginia, was at first a little hesitant about the subways, but soon changed her mind when she saw how convenient this mode of transportation can be. Walking around town was the best for my waistline and the actual middle of the city location made the trip back to the Hotel always seem to take no time at all, no matter where we ended up.

One of the best times of the day for us was bed time. To fall into those great beds, after spending the day out and about, was absolutely fantastic. We were asleep as soon as our heads touched the pillows.

With all the extras, the quality of the rooms and the value of the price, (we had one of their best rooms and it could have cost twice as much for what you get.) The other guests we met were all smiling, and spoke to us every time we encountered them. We met people from many other countries who, like us, came for the ambiance, price, and history. Its all goes with the personality of The Herald Square Hotel, from the friendly, helpful & knowledgeable hotel staff, to the wonderful Winged Life, and his Life Magazine collection.

All in all this was a great hotel stay, we’ll be back again and again.

I recommend this hotel for:  couples and romantics, families with small children, seniors, tourists
My visit was for:  out-of-town getaway
Would I stay at this location again:  absolutely!

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel New York City: "Location, Location, Location"

When visiting NYC we were very concerned about the hotel's location. Although I was brought up just outside of the city my wife is angenuine cowgirl from Texas. It has been many years since I was back up north and we never stayed in the city before. So Location was very important. Of course price is important too.

After checking out the customary chain hotels on the Internet I found the Herald Square Hotel. Being located on 31st between 5th Ave & Broadway and a very easy walking distance from the Empire State Building, Macy's, Madison Square Garden and restaurants of every description, taste and budget put this hotel on the shortlist. Once I confirmed the pricing for a room with two double beds I booked our reservations.

I was concerned that since this hotel topped out on the ninth floor that it was a very old hotel. The pictures on the Internet helped greatly in choosing this hotel.

After entering the lobby via an electrically secure entrance the check-in was easy and quick. The elevator doors opened and a very unique shape carriage lifted our six bags and 5 passengers at a moderate pace to the 9th floor. Upon the doors opening we saw plush emerald green Saxony carpet. The halls are narrow and the rooms close to the elevator.

In went the plastic punch card key and the door opened into a surprisingly lovely room. Although small compare to a modern Florida hotel but way larger than a cruise ship cabin. Just right for our party large enough to move about, small enough to comfortable. To our surprise a large flat screen TV was on one wall and a through the wall A/C unit on another. Both were great. The A/C was quiet and provided the cooling needed after a stroll to Times Square.

The bathroom was fully tiled and very clean. The full size tub and soft water from Con Edison hit the spot at the end of the day. Although on Sunday when many folks where getting ready to check out we ran out of hot water it was not a major problem. It only adds to the ambiance of this excellently renovated hotel. One of the extras for this hotel is its architecture. I guess the ceiling were 10 or 11 feet with large old world moldings. Also very attractive was the lighting. There were three brass wall lamps with universal flexibility and individual wall switches bed side, a real convenience. There was plenty of cabinet and draw space and for your valuables a programmable floor safe large enough for cameras, a laptop and pocketbook.

The bathroom linen was excellent, white bright and spotless. Extra towel was just a phone call any. The desk had what appeared to be a DVD player although we never used it, this was another nice feature.

I saved the best for last, the beds. This by all means would be the deal breaker for us to ever stay elsewhere in the city. The absolutely best we have ever slept on and we mean slept. It was moments after nestling in that we were a sleep. This is an uncommon event for us. I recently asked the brand and model of the mattresses. We want to buy them for our home. These mattresses are heavenly. That's it heavenly is the only way to describe them. They made the end of each day a pleasure to look forward to. We had grandchildren with us that were all round up from the day that jumped into bed. Imagine kids wanting to go to bed! That was the icing on the cake.

We enjoyed staying at the Herald Square Hotel that we stayed an extra night. In addition here is a not for those driving into the city. Once you park in the garage (not associated with the hotel) is stays. You do not need it. Also it is very expensive. We had a new Jeep and was considered oversize vehicle. Even with the excellent discount from the hotel it was $32 dollars a day so plan when you are leaving to get you car out before if clicks another day. Normal size cars with the hotel discount were $22 per day.

In closing we definitely stay at the Herald Square Hotel the next time we're in the city and so should you.

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel New York City: "Great Choice for a 1st visit to NY
I stayed at the Herald Square hotel for just over 2 weeks in May and as a first timer to NY thought this hotel was perfect for me the "budget" traveler. I searched the Internet and read every book trying to figure out where to stay and this place stood out due
to its location and rates. Upon arrival i was given an upgrade and was pleasantly surprised at the size of my room. It had a good size bathroom w shower in bath, air con, cable and enough space to move around comfortably in the room. The cleanliness was fantastic each day they cleaned the room and changed the linen. There was no street noise and the location was perfect right near Macys , 5th Ave, Madison Square garden and a good starting point for walking , be it downtown, uptown , east or west. Great restaurants and delis surrounding and the hotel had its our lounge room with coffee machine , Internet and lockers
.

I recommend this hotel for: Singles, Students, Beds

Would I stay at this location again:  I can not recommended it enough !!!!

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel New York City: "Our NYC Home away from Home"

We found the Herald Square Hotel on tripadvisor (-) while looking for budget hotels in NYC. We were really nervous about any hotel that only charges $99 per night, but we figured if it was awful we could always check out and go to one of the more expensive familiar hotels we always stay at. We were thrilled to find that Herald Square Hotel is the real deal -- our rooms were immaculately clean, smelled fresh (it's a no smoking hotel!), and the beds were as comfortable as the heavenly beds so widely touted by the Westin chain. We had beautiful clean white sheets and overstuffed down comforters in our rooms and had the best nights' sleep I've ever gotten in NYC. The location is great, we felt safe and comfortable, and it was just like having our own little haven in the middle of the city. It's not luxurious or decadent, but I've paid three times that much for a room not much better. I can't recommend it highly enough, what a great find! Thank you tripadvisor.com and thank you Herald Square Hotel. We'll never stay anywhere else in NYC.

Would I stay at this location again. . .Absolutely!

Feedback:Herald Square Hotel New York City: "I'll be there, e'er long"!

Pros: comfy beds, location, price, quiet, clean, safe, on site laundry and FREE WI-FI Internet
Cons: Checking Out!!

The Bottom Line
I would recommend anybody to stay here. It's a very friendly and warm hotel that puts the smile in service!

Full Review
This review is part of my whirlwind weekend in New York City. My friend and I read nothing but rave reviews about the hotel on the Internet through the various travel websites.

Tip: Book EARLY. This place fills up quick, and judging from this review and the many others you'll no doubt read, you will soon learn why.

Type (and cost!) of Room
My friend and I had one of their large rooms, with 2 double beds and huge private bath. The price was 90 dollars per night, inclusive of all taxes surcharges and the like.

Location
The hotel is located at 19 west 31st street, between 5th and 7th avenues. It is literally a short walk from Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, 2 blocks off Broadway and Madison aves. It's also in walking distance to the Empire State Building. It's basically in Central Manhattan, real near Times Square and the like.

Background
This hotel is also situated in the old Time-Life Magazine building, so there is a lot of memorabilia in the building from that era. You will see the Time-Life angels adorned throughout, also very nice gold gilt mirrors on every floor near the elevator. And if you look hard enough, you can see poems in black picture frames on walls throughout the building as well.

Amenities/Facilities
There is coin-op laundry back by the soda machine on the lobby floor, as well as an Internet terminal (1$ gets you 5 minutes, and its NOT dialup either) or you can bring your laptop and jack in for free. That's right...FREE.
There is also a nice seating area, complete with huge plate glass window and nice leather chairs and sofas where you can either read, go over your map, talk to your travel mate or other people that happen to be about... or just use your cellphone since you're going to get crap for a signal if you have any other carrier but Verizon Wireless.

Checking In
We arrived at the hotel well before check in time. Check in was 3 PM, we arrived at 11 am. I was expecting to ask where we could stow our things because our room wouldn't be ready for another 2 hours. To my surprise, we had our key and were up in our room in less than ten minutes.

How's the Service?
The service we had experienced throughout our stay there, and in New York City in general, was first class from start to finish. If you forgot something at home, the front desk either had it and would supply it at no charge to you, or they would go out and get it for you. I left my toothbrush at home... Oops. No big deal, they gave me one as well as some toothpaste.
The front desk could also tell you where to go to get some good cheap eats within a four or five block walk, and even gave us coupons for dinner Saturday night at Bella Napoli, on Madison Ave.
Housekeeping even replaced ALL of our towels, gave us fresh sheets and comforters, and vacuumed BOTH DAYS we were there. They returned the room to spotless, and didn't touch or move ANY of our things. I felt VERY safe here.

The 25 Cent Tour
Our room was not small at all, and was located on the 7th floor. On first glance, it had to be at least 20 foot long by at least 15 foot wide, not including the SPACIOUS bathroom that looked to be about 9 foot by 10 foot, and came complete with bathtub (yes you could take a bubble bath in it) and a marble sink with marble counter top. Shnazzy!
The beds were on the back wall (if you're looking from the doorway), and there was a light above each bed, complete with switch and double power outlet all in one. Neato idea for charging your cellphone and the like. There was a shared night table between the two. Above that night table there was a picture of one of the famous Time-Life angels.
On the right wall, ran a dresser. It was right next to the bed on the right, which just so happened to be MY bed. Not much walking room between the bed and dresser, but it was livable. Next to that, was a floor safe, with directions we couldn't figure out. On the back wall, above and to the right of my bed was a very large mirror which had a bright light above it for putting on your makeup, removing contacts, etc.
Along the wall that housed our front door, was an inset with a pole going between the two walls for hanging clothes, a luggage rack below for placing a suitcase, and placing shoes. Next to that and in front of the left bed was a large 27 inch television inside a cabinet, and the door to the bathroom. On the left wall, was the window and A/C Unit.
The bathroom, as stated earlier, looked to be about 9 foot by 10 foot, if not bigger. It had a marble sink and vanity area, complete with large mirror and 3 very bright lightbulbs above, handy for putting on makeup. It had a window that was openable, handy for de steaming the bathroom. There were 2 open outlets so you could use a hair dryer or curling iron or both at the same time.
There was a bathtub that had a showerhead in it. Someone had the great idea to get one of those shower rods that curved OUTWARD to prevent the curtain from sticking to your body! Pure Genius!
Our room and bathroom had windows that faced the front of the building. My only complaint, is that this is where the flagpole was situated, and when the wind blew hard (and it did!) we heard the pulleys for the flag banging against it. It sounded like someone was banging on the building's water pipes. But it wasn't anything major.

Sleeping in Comfort
The room was quiet. The beds were comfortable to the point where I fell asleep within minutes of laying down, and I can't do that even at home! The pillows were fluffy, the comforters were fuzzy and soft. I laid down, I was out. Let's face it, a hotel room is a hotel room, they all look the same when your eyes are closed!!

Checking Out =(
I don't know which is more of a travesty: the whole flagpole issue, or checking out Monday morning. The process was smooth and quick, they printed a receipt, asked my friend to sign (hey, he paid for it not me), handed him a copy and a souvenir keychain with an angel on it (which now resides on my suitcase with my name and addressed engraved into it).

Overall Score
The location is great, the price was unbeatable, the room was clean, the staff was very friendly, and the beds were comfortable. As far as I'm concerned, this hotel gets a 10 out of 10 stars. I would recommend anybody to stay here. The next time I'm in New York City, I certainly will. Heck, I'd go to New York City just to be able to stay here again!

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel: "Thank You for a Great Mini-Vacation!"

My friends and I want to thank you and the staff at Herald Square Hotel for helping to make our dream New York vacation such a success.

We stayed with you from December 4-7/05 and have only great things to say about our stay. What a bargain for a friendly, safe, and clean hotel. Our only comment (not meant to be a criticism) is that a bathroom vanity may have helped us four women get ready in the mornings - you know how women like to spread out all our toiletries when putting on our faces!

We will be recommending your hotel to all our friends and I personally can not wait to return with my family next time, for another great stay in New York City and the Herald Square Hotel. Thanks so much

Feedback: The Herald Square Hotel: "What a location, staff are wonderful"
:
I can say nothing but positive things about this hotel. Was over in New York for my brothers wedding in September 2005, and enjoyed my time up in Westchester. I needed somewhere close to everywhere in Manhattan after the wedding for my family and I ( including 3 children). Saw this hotel on the Lonely Planet guide for New York as a good budget hotel. Checked it out again on Trip Advisor, and decided I had seen enough to go ahead and book. The only negative I had about the whole experience was the fact that I couldn't book for 5 on the Internet website. I sent a quick mail to them, and they said, don't worry about it, book for 4 and send us a note. Therefore negative becomes positive as staff were helpful and my worries were dealt with. We then arrived at the hotel on the Sunday evening, Sept 25th. The staff welcomed us. The glass panels at reception look daunting, but at least they are safety conscious. The rooms are fairly basic, but had everything we needed. TV for the kids in the evening time when we were exhausted after lots of shopping and sightseeing, bathroom, beds were fine and AC. The pictures on the website do not give this hotel's location enough credit. You are about 1 minutes walk from the Empire State Building. Macy's, Madison Square Garden etc. are right beside you. Brilliant. I just want to finish up by complementing the staff, even though it will not be enough of a complement. On our last day, I think check out time is 12 noon. My shopaholic other half decided she wanted one last look and spend in Macys before we headed home. All went well except she had to go back to another department to get a tag to scan an item she was buying. Whilst heading to the department, she started looking at more items, got lost, and I couldn't find her and my daughter and son. My daughter and I walked around and couldn't find them. I couldn't believe there was no PA system, so I didn't find them until 1pm. I went back to the hotel, apologized for the late check out. They could not have been kinder as they realized I had got a shock. "Take your time" was the answer I was given. Wonderful, at a brilliant price for Manhattan. Stay there if you are on a budget, want to be treated with respect, and are looking for prime location. A+

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel: "Very good value for money"

We knew we were taking a risk, booking a budget hotel in Central Manhattan, but we were pleasantly surprised. The room is cozy without being pokey - adequate room for a couple and two suitcases. The room came with Sky, so I could watch both Premiership Football and Baseball. The bathroom was tiny, but private, clean and with fresh towels daily. The air con was slightly noisy, but the room was sheltered from the noises of the street and dark enough to sleep plenty. Of my three trips to NYC this was the best value hotel accommodation I've had. Next time we come back I think we'll probably go back; it's 3 blocks from Macys, Empire State Building and Penn Station, and reasonably priced.

Nice small hotel in midtown Manhattan. Rooms are good size for NYC and restful with no traffic noise. Walking distance from Penn Station and Empire State Building. The building is very old (original home of Life Magazine), so don't expect large hallways, elevators or lobby. Internet access via lobby kiosk (Wi-Fi coming soon). Not fancy, bring your own shampoo, but a very good value and nothing to complain about.

Feedback:"Thanksgiving 4 The Herald Square Hotel"

I stayed at the Herald Square Hotel in November 2004, over the Thanksgiving period. On my arrival, the receptionist told me that the room was small and offered to move me as soon as a bigger one became available. I was alone so the room was plenty big enough for me.
The room was very clean and fresh towels were provided every day. The shower and toilet were cleaned every day as well.
The staff were friendly and helpful and the location great. I will be staying at the Herald Square this November for Thanksgiving and would recommend it to anyone. Kath

Feedback: Herald Square Hotel: "The Facts!"

We are recently home from our first visit to NYC as a guest at the Herald square hotel. After reading the many mixed reviews on different websites, we had mixed feelings about what to expect so, these are the facts as we found them as of 3rd December 2004
The outside of the hotel is quite pretty but, there are building works at both the side and in front of the hotel. As far as the noise, we stayed over the weekend until midweek. No noise at weekend but, distant building sounds and banging from about 7.30 AM, I looked at it like this, if you are staying with the intention of lying in bed in the mornings, your on the wrong type of holiday! and if there wasn't this noise there is always the beeping cabs, and police sirens!...that’s the thrill of being mid town NYC.
The staff were really helpful, there was a slight problem with my booking, which they straight away accepted as their mistake and put right. Very helpful when asking about directions, places to eat and arranging cabs and exchanging T.cheques too.
The lobby, lifts and landings will not blow you away with the New York style and for that matter nor will the rooms. They were however, clean basic, safe and had really, really comfortable beds, which given that you will never in your life feel so exhausted at the end of a day, is a true bonus!
As the hotel says "Great budget hotel" and it really is!

We found hotel on the web. The hotel is 111 years old , so we asked for their newest rooms. We entered room 9 on the ground floor , a double with a brand new bathroom. A great bed and a flat screen TV. Very clean and quiet, a tad small but served us well. We walked the hallways to view the collection of early Life magazines, a clean well kept building. Staff is friendly and helpful. The staff seems to be constantly cleaning, painting etc. Spoke to other guest from all over the globe, all seemed happy with their rooms. A lot of history and charm here. We would recommend the 9th ,8th ,front of the hotel as well as the ground floor rooms to first timers. These are the rooms we had a chance to peek into on our hallway tour. We will stay here again. Cheers!!

Feedback: I've been to the Herald Square Hotel many times over the years, and have always enjoyed my stays there. I love to find "unique to the city" things on all my travels throughout the world. The Herald Square Hotel is the original "LIFE Magazine" building, they have made it into a museum and there is only one! My rooms have always been clean and well kept, the newer rooms are cozy and beautiful. I have watched as the owners have continuously upgraded the Hotel over time, new rooms, free wireless Internet access (usually you have to pay for this), a bigger lobby, 2nd elevator. The price has basically been the same "best in town" especially now as the cost of a room in NYC is going up all over. I'm here for the Halloween Parade, I love this City!!!!!!

Feedback: A recent reunion in New York City was nicely punctuated with a weekend stay at The Herald Square Hotel. The extremely reasonable rates and friendly staff were a welcome addition to the glorious festivities of the weekend. We were lucky to get one of the newer rooms, what really amazed me were the room's appointments: A flatscreen TV, a beautifully decorated bathroom and (quite frankly) one the most comfortable beds my girlfriend and I ever slept in. As a man of moderate means, I was grateful that my lodging cost enabled me to spend a bit more money on entertainment and dining; my girlfriend really enjoyed the bouquet of long stem roses (I have the young lady at the front desk to thank for helping me find a florist at the eleventh hour and at New York Prices the little perk didn't break my wallet). Needless to say you can add my name to the hotel's loyal customer base.

I highly recommend the Herald Square Hotel.
This hotel may just become our New York City "home-away-from-home" My wife & I stayed there on a friend's suggestion and had a wonderful experience. The place is amazing. Our room (812) was a nice size, bright and clean, the queen-sized bed with white linen and extra pillows was extra comfortable for my wife and I (Just like home). The price was $99.00 a midweek special we found on their cherub filled website, it was very easy to do. The Staff were very friendly, and Mr. Puchall told us about some of Life Magazine's incredible history. The walls of the Hotel are covered with artwork and memorabilia from Life, so it's like staying at a museum. For the money, location, and style, I ‘m recommending the Herald Square Hotel to all my "friends and relatives" when they visit New York City. We will definitely be back!

I am a regular repeat guest at the Herald Square Hotel. I have tried their smallest, cheapest rooms , no views but very clean and everything works. My regular choice rooms are their queen sized doubles which are usually sold out. One must book far in advance. The staff always tries its best when and if a problem arises they are quick to attend to it.. Management is always available to be spoken with, and they have always been fair and honest with me. I share my review with others because affordable hotels in NYC are a becoming hard to find and this one is a gem.

On the 21,22,23, of May, I visited your beautiful city and stayed two nights at your Hotel. I wanted to let you know that I enjoyed my stay, and you made me feel very comfortable. I intend to come back to NYC as soon as I can, and I will definitely stay at the Herald Square Hotel. The accommodations were very good. I would recommend your Hotel to all who would come to NYC, I love your city. It’s so big and the people are nice. I only got to see a fraction of it, but that was great, I’m coming back. Thanks again.

Due to a last minute business trip to attend a trade show at the Jacob Javits Convention center, I stayed at the Herald Square Hotel in a room with two double beds at $140 plus tax. Every other hotel in NYC was either sold out or wanted $260-$375 plus tax. I could have stayed in Jersey for less, but didn't want the hassle of a morning commute into the city. The room was clean but my only choice was a smoking room and I'm a nonsmoker. This is in a great location, within walking distance of Penn Station and the PATH station, right near Macy's. Like the other reviewers, you need to ask yourself how much time will you spend inside your room. The less time you spend in the hotel, the more you will appreciate its value. Parking is $21 per day, just around the corner; compare this to $40.00 at some of the midtown hotels. Lots of Korean restaurants nearby for the adventurous or those on the Atkins diet; try the Korean BBQ!! The staff was very professional and courteous.

I read the information of the hotel in the Lonely Planet guidebook for New York. Your hotel had been recommended as a place to stay worth the value of the price we pay. So I surfed the website and found your hotel. I stayed at your hotel between 31 March and 2 April this year, and as I had to visit a friend down in New Jersey, I had discontinued my stay at your hotel. But I returned on 4 April and stayed in until the day of my departure. I really did enjoy my stay at your hotel. One thing I am always anxious of when staying at hotels is whether or not I'd be able to sleep well. I did in your hotel during all the nights I stayed in. Your other guests were neat and quiet, or you just had thick walls, but I had a very relaxed stay there. Your staff had been ultimately friendly and I found everything I needed for a hotelroom: A clean bathroom, a clean toilet, and clean sheets on the bed. I didn't bother to have no breakfast included as there are plenty smaller food stalls or restaurants just around the corner.
The location of your hotel was absolutely fabulous. The street itself isn't that pretty, but it is just a 10 minutes walk from Penn Station, a 10 minutes walk from Macy's and a 20 minutes walk from Time Square. For someone like me who had never been to New York before, this was a very convenient location. All the subways stops I needed for museum visits and sightseeing were either just around the corner if not departing from Penn Station. I am a person who loves to travel, therefore I have stayed at youth hostels and at 5 star hotels. The Herald Square Hotel I definitely can recommend as a hotel for budget travelers, but I want to add to that description that it provides the service that is exceeding your expectations of a budget hotel. Thank you for making my stay so enjoyable!

Feedback:A friend of mine just came into town for a few days and is staying at the Herald Square Hotel on West 31st just off Fifth Ave. Went to visit him and was amazed at the Hotel. It's 110 years old and is a living museum. It was the home of the old Life humor magazine and the Gibson Girl. Its corridors and rooms are hung with old Life covers and late 19th and early 20th century memorabilia. Got into a conversation with Abe Puchall, owner and manager. This guy knows everything about New York and Life Magazine. He considers the hotel a sacred trust, takes care of it like it was a deluxe four star hotel. And the best is its budget! Rooms for $99 a night! I couldn't believe in today's economy you could find such a wonderful bargain in New York City!

I want to let you know how wonderful my family found your hotel recently. My cousin was coming to NY to see her sister who was hours from death. I found your hotel on the web and found it was reasonably priced, seemed nice and was near the sisters address. I recommended your hotel to my cousin and aunt and hoped it would be tolerable. Well, they found it very nice, clean and your staff just wonderful, I think she was even upgraded. I just want you to know that your hotel made a extremely unbearable time a little more comfortable.
Thank you R. M.
